Taste: Weird, in a good way. Grippy and tannic. Grape seeds.

Orange wine. What the actual eff?

These two words either make wine nerds sit up excitedly or make normal people think their two-for-twelve Aldi whites have been sun-baking in the back of the car too long.

Enter the Vino Volta Different Skins 2024.

I remember trying this and immediately thinking, “Ooo! This is a funky little player that’ll kick-start some convos!”

This is definitely not your standard Friday night Sauvignon Blanc. Made from old-vine Swan Valley Frontignac and Perth Hills Gewürztraminer, the grapes spend time on their skins during fermentation, giving the wine extra colour, texture and plenty of personality.

And this thing is not shy.

The perfume reminds me of the lolly jar at my nan’s house - Turkish delight, rose, citrus, tropical fruit and sweet spice all jumping out of the glass. The palate is bright and fresh, but there’s also a gentle grip, savoury edge and slight bitterness on the finish.

Basically, it’s interesting as hell.

Will everyone love it? Probably not.

But that’s kind of the point.

This is adventurous winemaking from a small producer - a little funky, a little weird and definitely not designed to please everyone.

A little weird? Uh huh!

A little wonderful? Absolutely.
